For Sabato de Sarno’s debut collection at Gucci, a house previously characterised by Alessandro Michele’s kitschy, cool, downright over-the-top aesthetic, he did a 180. Where Michele opted for clashing prints, ornate textures and quirky references, de Sarno went the other way, looking to the house codes for inspiration and crafting a collection devoid of prints, with a fairly muted colour palette (save for pops of acid green) and sleek lines. It was a shock to the fashion world, which had become accustomed to Gucci’s outlandish collections, but it resonated with the luxury shopper.

You can get your hands on the collection at QueensPlaza’s Gucci boutique on Ground Level now, so to get you across the trends to know and pieces to keep an eye out for, here, we recap the house’s spring/summer 2024 collection.

Who: Gucci by Sabato de Sarno

What: Spring/Summer 2024

Key trends:

Sporty Chic

Sabato de Sarno doesn’t want you to swear off activewear, he just wants you to wear it with something a little more formal. Patent leather pencil skirts were teamed with three-quarter zip polos while embossed mini shorts were worn with hoodies. Proof that you can have both.

Oxblood and neon

Though oxblood was everywhere on the spring/summer 2024 runways, Gucci might have made the most compelling case for it. The burnished shade was on jackets, shoes, and skirts, spliced through with neon lime for contrast.

Chunky jewellery

Take your gold or silver necklace, and then make it 10 times bigger. Gucci played with proportion on the jewellery front, blowing up collar-bone grazing chokers to make a serious statement.

Tiny shorts

Micro shorts were the bottom du jour in de Sarno’s debut collection. These are shorts for the bold — they nod to the bloomer, underwear-as-outerwear trend we’ve seen on runways for the last couple of seasons, and are best worn with confidence.

 Platform loafers

The higher the better, according to de Sarno. The collection saw loafers taken up a notch, complete with platforms so high you could roll an ankle if you weren’t careful. They were worn with pencil skirts and micro shorts alike and finished in patent burgundy, white and black.

Looks we love:
Look 21: A grey polo worn with embossed oxblood micro shorts and an acid-bright coat, complete with swinging silver fringe.
Look 41: A pistachio green mini dress covered in silver embellishments worn over a pair of baggy blue jeans.   Look 46: A micro mini dress in vibrant orange, adorned with heavy silver embellishments and finished with spaghetti straps.

Look 50: A fire engine red patent leather mini, with delicate black lace fringing the neckline.

Pieces we’d shop:

The scoop neck mini shift dress is equal parts sweet and sultry, thanks to its embossed black leather fabrication. The sky-high loafers give the entire ensemble a chic ‘60s feel.
The cornflower blue patent leather midi skirt with a splice up the front is our kind of office chic. Wear it with a gauzy blouse and pumps or a baggy hoodie and loafers — you choose.

Everyone needs a perfectly cut jacket in their repertoire, and this slightly boxy navy version would get you through the entire year in very stylish fashion.
